Bring the everyday essentials.

  • A photo ID
  • A list of your medications
  • Your questions and any vision concerns you want to discuss

What happens during your eye exam?

Your exam is tailored to your age, health history, vision concerns and previous findings. Not every test is needed at every visit.

Your history and concerns

We discuss your vision, eye and medical history, medications, and any questions or changes you have noticed.

Vision and prescription

Testing may include distance and near vision, color vision, and refraction to determine your glasses prescription. Instrument-based measurements can help with children and others who have difficulty answering lens-comparison questions.

How your eyes work together

Tests of eye alignment, movement and depth perception help your doctor assess how your eyes track, focus and work as a team.

Your eye health

Your doctor uses a slit-lamp microscope and other instruments to examine the structures of your eyes. Eye-pressure measurements, peripheral (side) vision checks and additional testing may be used as needed. Pressure measurement is one part of assessing glaucoma risk.

Will my eyes be dilated?

Dilation is rare at iDoctor. Patients who choose Optomap retinal imaging almost never need dilation, though your doctor may recommend it based on your symptoms, eye health or exam findings.

If dilation is needed to examine the retina, optic nerve or other structures inside your eyes, the drops usually take about 20–30 minutes to widen your pupils. Allow extra time if your doctor recommends it.

If your eyes are dilated, temporary blurry near vision and light sensitivity can last for several hours. Bring sunglasses and plan for someone to drive you home after a dilated exam. Do not drive while your vision is affected or you feel unable to drive safely.

Give yourself time for the visit.

Your eye exam

30 minutes

Scheduled eye exam slots are 30 minutes. Allow extra time if you plan to choose glasses or contact lenses afterward. If dilation or additional testing is needed, ask our team how much more time to allow.
